GDP Growth Rate(real GDP)

Monitoring Indicators are determined by the following nine major economic indicators:

  • Monetary Aggregates M1B
  • Direct and Indirect Finance
  • Stock Price Index
  • Industrial Production Index
  • Nonagricultural Employment
  • Exports
  • Imports of Machinery and Electrical Equipment
  • Manufacturing Sales
  • Wholesale, Retail and Food Services Sales

Leading Indicators

An indicator which measures the economic performance in the next three months. It is determined by the following seven economic indicators:

  • Index of export orders
  • Real monetary aggregates M1B
  • Stock prices
  • Index of producer’s inventory
  • Average monthly overtime in industry and services
  • Building Permits
  • SEMI Book-to-Bill Ratio

Coincident Indicators

An indicator which measures the current economic performance. The components of the coincident indicator are:

  • Industrial production
  • Electric power consumption
  • Real manufacturing sales
  • Sales index of wholesale, retail, and food services
  • Nonagricultural employment
  • Real customs-cleared exports
  • Real machineries and electrical equipments imports

An indicator which measures the Business Climate of the Manufacturing Industry.

Export Orders Growth Rate

The annual g rowth rate of new export orders received.

Exports Growth Rate

The annual growth rate of export value measured in F.O.B.

Imports Growth Rate

The annual g rowth rate of import value measured in C.I.F.

Trade Surplus ( Deficit )

Industrial Production Index Growth Rate

The annual g rowth rate of the aggregate output of manufacturing, construction, mining, electricity, water and gas industries.

Unemployment Rate

The number of people unemployed /Labor force x 100%.

Consumer Confidence Index

The consumer confidence index is designed to gauge consumer expectations for the coming six months in five categories - overall livelihood, income growth, prices, employment, and willingness to buy durable goods.

The Sales Growth Rate of Wholesales & Retail & Eating/Drinking Places

An indicator which measures the market activities of wholesales & retail firms & eating/drinking places.

WPI Growth Rate

An indicator which measures the production cost of firms.

CPI Growth Rate

An indicator which measures the general living cost of individuals and households. It is also used as a major reference for Central Bank to fine-tune the monetary policy.

Core CPI Growth Rate

CPI can be greatly influenced in any given month by a movement in volatile food and energy prices. Therefore, it is important to look at CPI excluding food and energy, commonly called “Core CPI”.

Monetary Aggregate M2 (Averages of Daily Figures) Growth Rate

Monetary Aggregate M2 = M1B + Quasi-Money, quasi-money refers to the time deposits (including general time deposits and negotiable certificates of deposit (NCDs)), time savings deposits, foreign currency deposits of enterprises and individuals in monetary institutions, and postal savings deposits. From the data of Jan. 1994 onwards, it also includes repurchase agreements and non-residents NT deposits.

Monetary Aggregate M1B (Averages of Daily Figures) Growth Rat

Monetary Aggregate M1B = Currency Held by the Public + Deposit Money, or M1B = M1A + Passbook Savings Deposits of Individuals (includes non-profit organizations) in Monetary Institutions.

An indicator which measures the growth rate of loans & investments of major financial institutions by their end of year figures.

An indicator which measures the average of 7 leading banks' fix interest rate for one year time deposit savings.

The weighted average of Overnight I nterbank Call Loan Rates

The Overnight Interbank Call Loan Rates are the prices paid for one day loans and define the short end of the yield curve. The weighted average of Overnight Interbank Call Loan Rates refer to the weighted average of o vernight lending rates on O/N deposits of panel banks on the I nterbank Call Loan market.

An indicator which measures the interest rate for 31~90 days of Commercial Paper in the Primary Market.

F. Ex. Spot Rate (NT$/US$, inter-bank closing rate, monthly average)

The average monthly foreign exchange spot rate of NT dollar against that of US dollar. Source: same as #17.

Real Effective Exchange Rate Index ( Taipei Foreign Exchange Market Development Foundation )

A nominal effective exchange rate index represents the ratio of an index of the period average exchange rate of the currency in question to a weighted geometric average of exchange rates for the currencies of selected countries. A real effective exchange rate index is defined as a nominal effective exchange rate index adjusted for relative movements in national price or cost indicators of the home country and selected countries.

Capitalization Weighted Stock Index (monthly average)

Among the many stock indices published by the TSEC( Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation ), the most frequently quoted one is the TSEC Capitalization Weighted Price Index (TAIEX). TAIEX has been published since 1971, based on the average capitalization in 1966. Other weighted indices include non-finance, non-electronics and 22 Sector Indices by industries. In addition, the TSEC publishes two arithmetic average price indices: the TSEC composite (of 30 companies) and the TSEC industrial (of 20 manufactures). (1966 average=100)
